Is Buy Now Pay Later Halal? Klarna, Afterpay, Affirm & Late Fees

Is BNPL (Klarna, Afterpay, Affirm) a deferred sale or disguised interest? Late fees, missed payments, and scholarly views — educational, not a fatwa.

Short answer: Buy now, pay later can look like a deferred-price sale (often discussed as closer to lawful) or like a short-term loan with fees (closer to riba). The label “0% interest” is not enough. Late fees, missed-payment interest, and whether the BNPL firm bought the goods or only lent you cash change the analysis. Covers Klarna, Afterpay, Affirm, and similar apps. Not a fatwa.

Sale vs loan

Structure If this is what happens… Typical posture
Merchant sells at a disclosed price; you pay in interest-free installments; no extra if on time Deferred sale More lenient among contemporary researchers — still check late fees
BNPL pays the merchant; you owe BNPL a cash debt that grows if late Loan More prohibitive
“Pay in 4” with a fee built into a higher sticker vs paying cash Hidden surplus Conditional to prohibitive

Late fees and missed payments

A fixed administrative fee for a real cost (letter, processing) is debated but sometimes allowed. A fee that grows with days overdue or a percentage of the balance is widely treated as riba. If the app reports you to credit bureaus and then offers a refinance at interest, that is a conventional loan.

Klarna, Afterpay, Affirm — ask the same questions

  1. Did anyone sell you the item at a known total, or only lend money?
  2. What happens on day 15 if you miss a payment?
  3. Is there a cash vs BNPL price difference?

Is Afterpay haram? Same cluster

Treat Afterpay as the same family as Klarna unless the contract is a true deferred sale with no time-based surplus. Do not need a separate thin article.
