Is Day Trading Crypto Haram? Speculation, Leverage & Wash Trading

Day trading Bitcoin and alts vs long-term holding: maysir, leverage, wash trading. Distinct from staking and DeFi yield. Educational, not a fatwa.

Short answer: Even scholars who treat spot Bitcoin as possible mal often separate day trading. Rapid in-and-out trading for price bets looks like maysir and high gharar. Add leverage, perpetual futures, or wash trading and the prohibitive view gets stronger. This is not the same article as staking or DeFi. Not a fatwa.

Holding vs flipping

Activity Typical range
Long-term spot hold (if you accept the asset at all) See Bitcoin 2026
Intraday scalps on BTC/ETH Often more prohibitive than holding
Leveraged day trades Usually prohibitive — leverage
Perpetual futures Funding rates as riba-like

Why “I’m good at charts” is not a ruling

Skill does not turn a zero-sum price bet into a sale of a used asset. The fiqh question is the contract, not your win rate.

Wash trading and pump groups

Artificial volume and coordinated pumps are deception. They fail Islamic ethics even before riba.
