Is Student Loan Interest Haram? US Federal, UK Finance & Necessity

Student loan riba: US federal vs private, UK income-contingent loans, refinancing, and whether ‘necessary education’ exceptions apply. Not a fatwa.

Short answer: Interest on a student loan is riba in the majority view — federal or private, US or otherwise. Some Western fatwas discuss dire need (no other path to required education, no Islamic alternative). That is framed as last resort, not a general permission. UK income-contingent loans are still widely analyzed as interest-bearing government loans, even when they feel like a tax. Not a fatwa.

US federal vs private

Loan Typical analysis
Private bank / refinance at a rate Classic riba
US federal Direct / PLUS Still a loan with interest, even if subsidized or paused
Scholarships / family qard hasan Preferable
Income-driven repayment May change cashflow; does not automatically erase the riba ruling

UK student finance

Plan 2 / Plan 5 loans accrue interest and are collected via HMRC. Many UK scholars still treat them as interest-based. A minority analogize the package to a government levy. Do not assume “everyone has one” is a fatwa.

Refinancing

Refinancing into another interest loan to “get a better rate” is still riba. Paying down from halal income as soon as reasonably possible is the usual advice from the prohibitive camp.

Necessity — handle with a scholar

Need for a degree, immigration, or professional license is fact-specific. IFQA can map the debate; a certified scholar should apply darurah to your case.
